Just like how the first years and I were creating group choreography, so were the second years. The second-year students were given the opportunity to work alongside choreographer Terry Beck as they started creating a dance theatre performance. As all of the students were born and raised in Wales, they wanted to create something that held significance to the country that they call home and decided that they would create a piece based on the Aberfan disaster, an awful and upsetting event that happened in Welsh history. During the process, the students had to do a lot of research and fact-checking in order to make sure they didn’t offend anyone or belittle the event that happened, while allowing Terry Beck to help on the acting and placement side, as for the first couple of months he was still in America. Originally, it was just going to be the second years performing this piece; however, after careful consideration, they decided to allow us as the first years to participate in order to help show the event and bring it closer to reality. This gave us the opportunity to work together alongside Terry, doing many tasks to help us use our faces and expressions more, as well as showing us how we can make even the smallest of movements interesting by either elongating them or using our eyes/ focus. Not only were we able to work alongside Terry Beck, but composer, musical director, and performer Helen Woods too. Helen worked to help us when it came to being vocal and singing within the performance, as the second years found the importance of having the song ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ become a repeated aspect within the piece. Although my part in this particular performance wasn't massive, we needed everyone; we needed as many bodies in the space as we could, so we were able to make the performance as impactful as it could be. And I am honoured to have been part of something of this much significance. Music credit - BBC interview recordings, unknown music source (Please contact for credit)
