Blood In The Water

As a part of the A-Level curriculum, I was tasked with creating choreography for three of my other classmates. This was my first time properly choreographing for other people, and it was a challenge for me but still a good learning experience. Because this was during the peak of COVID in 2020, we were only allowed one dance session a week, and within that session everyone had to work on their choreographies, resulting in days where I wasn’t able to fully progress the piece as I couldn’t rehearse with the dancers. Even with all of the obstacles thrown my way, I was still able to create a performance of choreography that I’m proud of, creating it within lockdowns and isolation. For this particular project, I was given creative freedom; with no song restrictions and no theme to follow, I was able to create what I wanted, with one exception. That being I had to add a section of choreography from Sidi Labri’s creation, 'Sutra'. This was because I chose this piece to write about in my essay and had to add it in practice. While in the creation stage, I decided that I wanted to display a strong power dynamic between the three dancers, representing their emotions. I wanted to portray the middle dancer (Alex) as the human, the main person in this story; the tall dancer (Abi) as anger and wanting to be strong without showing emotions; and the smaller dancer (Gwen) as emotional vulnerability and sadness. Their moves respecting their characters. Both Abi’s and Gwen’s characters are a part of Alex, both wanting to take control over her for their own desires, either to show emotions and be free or not. Although this isn’t the full footage, I was able to complete the choreography to the best of my ability in the time period given, and I await a response from my previous tutor in order to get footage of the full performance.
