71 x ARC studio summer camp
After our end-of-year performance, ‘IMPACT 2023’, we were able to host a second show in collaboration with St. Peter’s Players in aid of Rubicon: 'Come to the Cabaret’. Unlike our other performances, where it was solely dancing, we offered a multitude of musical acts on the side of a two-course meal. In preparation for the performance and the new stage, the teachers and staff at Rubicon quickly went to work, choosing different pieces from ‘IMPACT 2023’ that could be adjusted and performed in the new space with fewer dancers. This was because, when the performance would take place, it was already after the end of the academic year, resulting in some dancers, including myself, to be away on holiday. Although, just because I was away on holiday at the time of the performance does not mean that I didn’t partake in the show at all. This is due to the fact that I was given the offer and trust of my teachers to reset the piece, ‘All That Jazz’, including new formations and groups to make up for the lack of dancers. I was only given a handful of rehearsal sessions, and very rarely was everyone in attendance. This made it harder for me to fully visualise and know if the specific dancers were capable of different parts within the piece. Even with the short amount of time given, I was able to rework the performance in order to make it look equal to, or even better than, the original. However, on the day of the performance, a couple of the dancers present were unable to perform, some for injuries and others for illness. This made it so there were some last-minute changes of formations and counts within the piece, making it so some of the dancers were confused and some sections didn’t look as clean as they did when everyone was performing.
