Get Social

During our weekly Street classes at Rubicon Dance, we were given the task of working alongside our teacher, Jess Lewis, to create a piece for ‘The Schools Dance Festival, an annual event run by Rubicon. Within the creative process, we, as a class, learned the fundamentals of House, HotStepping and Waacking, as they ended up being the three main styles we performed. This is because Jess decided she wanted a piece that celebrated the social dances in contrast to the strict techniques we were getting taught in our other classes, hence the name ‘Get Social’. ‘The Schools Dance Festival’, is on the 11th and 12th of January 2023, and as a pre-performance of the piece, we were given the opportunity to perform it at the Christmas sharing, allowing and helping us as dancers to have a better idea of how we can improve our performance and intention while also allowing us to fully feel the piece in its final form. At the time of the Christmas sharing, a couple of the dancers were unable to attend as they had fallen sick; two of those dancers were my partners during the group section. This didn’t stop me, though, as I still persevered and gave the best performance I could.
