Good Woman

As the new head of vocation training, Deborah Ford wanted to make sure that the first show done by Rubicon with her leading was done well, and now as an all-AFAB team of teachers and dancers, she wanted to show the power we held. Which is how she got the idea for the piece ‘Good Woman’, choosing a song to represent the struggles that a lot of women go through, using a powerful voice as we allowed it to empower us. Not only did we allow the music choice to impact us, but the choice in costumes as well. This is due to the fact that suits are mainly associated with men and masculine energy. However, after a group discussion, we all agreed with this idea as a way for us to reclaim and show that we are powerful and equal to each other. Throughout the creative stage, we originally all got taught the choreography and performed it together so we could all get a baseline in the foundations. But as time went on, Deborah decided to have groups of dancers only do certain sections in order to make the transitions more interesting and so that we could all make the moves bigger within the space that we were given. This also allowed for multiple sections to be performed at the same time, for example, when three dancers were in the middle of the circle rotating as they performed the ‘rant’ section, while the rest of the dancers created the circle while doing the choreography that we were initially taught.
