Viragos
After being able to perform 'Get Social' two times in the past, the Rubicon students, including myself, have been given the opportunity to develop the piece alongside choreographer Jess Lewis to have it ready for the end-of-year show. ‘IMPACT 2023’. Within this setting, we were now allowed to use the lyrics in the songs and add more to the setlist as a whole, including a new waacking and house section. During the creative process between 'The Schools Dance Festival' and 'Impact 2023', Jess decided to try and include as many solos in the piece as possible, making sure everyone had their moment to shine. This is because, after getting to know us better, Jess said that it was obvious that we had more confidence within us than we show, and she wanted to help us explore that side of ourselves by embracing our femme energy, which is why all the singers in this rendition are female. This breakthrough gave Jess the inspiration to change the name from ‘Get Social’ to 'Viragos'. The term ‘virago’ was used to describe a strong and/or difficult woman, meaning it was an insult. But Jess made it clear to all of us and showed us just how important it is to reclaim terms like that and use them to our advantage.
